But I think I might know why. See here, if they did try to translate the name Baal, then there is one thing they would have to deal with. Look at how the verse would read if they did not restore Yahweh's name: 1Kin 18:21 (NKJV) And Elijah came to all the people, and said, "How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Lord (Baal), follow him." But the people answered him not a word. One might be quite confused when reading the text. Because of this relationship between Baal and Lord, I prefer not to use Lord at all. Lord is the word used to replace Yahweh's name. I'm not saying that the entire Christian world is worshiping "Baal", but the coincidence here seems quite striking.
