GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA (Worthy News)– A small evangelical Christian congregation in Florida plans to burn Korans Saturday, as a protest against violent Islamic extremists on September 11, the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks against the United States.

Reverend Terry Jones, pastor of Dove World Outreach Center, says despite receiving death threats, he and other church members plan to burn 200 Korans on Saturday at the church.

Reverend Jones told media that Islamic extremism poses "a threat" to the United States and the world. He stressed however that moderate Muslims should feel free to practice their faith and said his church's message is not intended for all Muslims. "We are not hateful toward Muslims. We are not aiming this at Muslims,"we are aiming this at Sharia law."

The pastor explained that his announced "International Burn a Koran Day" will "honor those who were murdered at that time [September 11th]." The event, he said, is sending "a real clear message out to Islam that we will not tolerate, we do not want them trying to push their agenda on us, in other words, Sharia law."

PISTOLS

Reverend Jones said he and other members now carry pistols to defend the congregation of some 50 people. He refused to cancel the protest. "How much do we back down? How many times do we back down?" Jones told The Associated Press (AP) news agency.

"Instead of us backing down, maybe it's to time to stand up. Maybe it's time to send a message to radical Islam that we will not tolerate their behavior."

Still, Jones said he would pray about his decision. He has dismissed criticism of other Christians as "cowardly." He said, even if they think burning Korans is extreme, Christians should be standing with him in "denouncing the principles of Islam".

Critics of Jones say the Koran burnings will be unnecessary putting the lives of Christians living within Islamic nations at risk. "How will the burning of Korans help me spread the gospel?", a pastor within an Islamic nation, who asked not to be identified for security reasons, told Worthy News. "The Koran burnings will endanger the lives of the members of our underground church."

PROTESTS

In Afghanistan, in the capital city of Kabul hundreds gathered to denounce any desecration of the Koran, chanting "Long live Islam" and "Death to America." Some people said the event is aimed directly at Muslims everywhere. Hundreds rallied in Kabul, Afghanistan, to denounce Jones and any desecration of the Koran.

In Indonesia, thousands of Muslims  rallied outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta to denounce any Koran burnings.

General David Petraeus, top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said the Koran burnings could endanger U.S. troops and damage the overall war effort in that country.  He warned that images of the burning of a Koran "would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan – and around the world – to inflame public opinion and incite violence".

Reverend Renwick Bell, the pastor of a nearby church, told reporters that very few Christians would support burning the Koran. "When a Christian minister does something like this, I like to ignore it, yet it does cause fervor in the world. I just think he [Jones] is doing something without thinking about it, or trying to get publicity," he told the Voice of America (VOA) network.

The enemy is using his people, religion, muslim hindus, to attack against Christ follower but we are not against physical kingdom but against spiritual principalities, power, dominion.

Violence beget violence and the end thereof is destruction. We are told to stand up in His authority and in His name against the enemy and its works by binding them and releasing of His grace, His kingdom. Are not we commanded even to turn the other cheek? forgive 77 times?

I'm not defending Islam by any means, but burning the Koran is not going to bring back the 3,000 people who lost their lives on 9/11. It isn't going to bring back all the soliders who lost their lives in the war because of what happened on 9/11. It will not solve anything. All this incident will do is incite more violence and death to innocent people. "Vengence is mine says the Lord." I say leave it in the hands of God – He is in control.

Followers, pls bear withme. I believe Jones IS led by God. (I live far, far away from him & never ever heard of him or his group before; but I am a Christian and believe I hear his purpose.) The foolish in this day confound the wise. He has picked the right time by Grace to stage an innocent expression (takes pains to clarify that not ALL Muslims are the point of his retribution). While a great deal of the world CHOOSES to center on how it may be misread it is CLEAR this provides opportunity and timing to be READ EXACTLY how it is directed…. that is to say at fundamentalist Muslims who've mocked our lack of knowledge of their religion, and have murdered in the name of their lord. (IF MORE Muslims are incited to do such things in retaliation, as they claim were simply an alien phenomenon in their class, doesn't that prove something?!) Fellow Christians, pls take time to repent of your judgment of Jones' leadership lest you be in danger of correcting Our Lord Himself when He rebuked the Pharisees. (Do not pls quickly attack me as taking this verse out of context. Pls listen. And pray for him. ) At any earlier date this might've been grossly out-of-place. But at the right time, those who CLAIM to be our "brothers" spiritually and in a one-world-belief sense are these same Muslims who have taken it upon themselves to try to teach US a lesson, thereby taking authority that has led some of their own countrymen to kill, rob and destroy. We are commanded by our Lord to challenge anyone who claims to be a "brother" to put things in a correct spiritual sense. This deserves careful attn wh/I believe this unique congregation of Florida believers is giving it. They are not staging fronts, haven't even broken a law in dealing out their message. They are exercising one of the very specific purposes of our rights which is to keep freedom of religion unshackled by bullying from the other side. REMEMBER PLS, Tolerance is ONLY a byproduct of true rectitude, but not the whole point. For at some point, in order to have justice, tolerance must break, in order that some wholesome egg may hatch from our disagreements; in order that men truly might enjoy freedom. I think Jones means to reach this more wholesome goal despite the surprising avenue he's having to take just to get the correct conversation started amongst peoples of the world. Do not fault him because he doesn't have YOUR PhD or GOVT POSITION. That is probably the reason God is ABLE to use him! In short, he's saying "enough is enough".

I think WHATEVER the Lord decides to do with this group. The work has been done. The message is out. And those who say leave it to the wrath of God, should be addressing that WHOLLY to the ones who choose to respond in MUCH MORE devastating ways to a message that Jones clearly says he doesn't represent. He is ONLY ASKING that these people (not sure who all exactly but all anyone who fits the bill) RESPECT OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN! And I am betting on the fact however this turns out OUR LORD WILL back him. Watch out! The results might be more peaceful than you may've dreamed. Even though we must ask ourselves, who are we as believers to fear death?

The LORD be with me, I pray, for taking this stand. It is not my normal fare. But I'd hope to have gained your faithful prayers for all those in the church who are simply "trying " to learn and do what is pleasing to the LORD. We must NOT put our God in a box, but live with Him in the consistency of His character – which we know by tradition we believers have often missed.
