United Nations Undermines Family, Religion, And Sovereignty By Rev. Louis P. Sheldon Washington, DC - Patrick Fagan, a research Fellow in Family and Cultural Issues at the Heritage Foundation has just published a devastating critique of the United Nations' policies impacting families, religion, and national sovereignty. In "How U.N. Conventions on Women's And Children's Rights Undermine Family, Religion, and Sovereignty," Fagan observes that social policy agents in U.N. Committees, "working often with radical special-interest groups, advise nations to alter the very structure of their societies to decrease the emphasis on marriage, the nuclear family, parental authority, and religious beliefs; mothers are encouraged to find fulfillment by leaving their children in the care of strangers and entering the workforce, and social or legal restraints on sexual activity among adolescents are targeted for removal." Fagan clearly demonstrates that United Nations' treaties frequently undermine the sovereignty of nations and parental rights. The U.N., for example, has urged the passage of the Convention on the Rights of the Child-a treaty that will usurp parental rights and internationalize the "rights of children" over the rights of parents. U.N. policy advisers have urged the legalization of prostitution and homosexuality and have lobbied for widespread abortion on demand in Third World nations. The Bush Administration, notes Fagan, has an opportunity to resist signing of any United Nations treaties that undermine the family, religion, or national sovereignty. He urges Bush advisers to monitor the activities of U.N. committees that are engaged in actions that threaten family stability and freedom-especially in poor nations-which are less able to defend themselves from U.N. social engineering. Fagan also suggests that the Bush Administration should reduce funding to U.N. committees that attempt to change the cultural and religious traditions of sovereign nations. In addition, the U.S. should build alliances with nations that are dedicated to strengthening the traditional family, religious freedom, and national sovereignty. With the Clinton Administration in exile in New York City, our government has a new beginning. We must reassert the principles that have made our nation great-and which contribute to freedom around the globe. On the international level, our goal should be to promote national sovereignty, religious freedom, and strong family units. All of these important social concerns will be destroyed if United Nations planners have their way. We must make sure they don't win.
