The landlocked Hindu kingdom of Nepal that so long resisted the
incursion of foreign gospel witness within its borders now numbers approximately 500,000
believing Christians, due almost exclusively to the witness of ethnic Nepali Christians.
But finding leaders for thousands of worshiping groups in this Himalayan country is a
challenge. One Nepali Christian leader is rising to meet that need.
A former Hindu Brahmin priest turned Christian preacher and apostle is conducting training
seminars for local Christian leaders. A training seminar in Western Nepal in August was
attended by 104 local church leaders.
A seminar for local church women is being planned for another region west of Kathmandu in
September. The leaders expect two women from each of 60 congregations of the region to
attend. Many will have to walk several days to attend.
The ministry offers a three-year Bible correspondence course that has attracted over
225,000 students. So far 22,350 have completed it, and of these, 2,894 have taken
additional discipleship training.
The leader conducted four one-week discipleship training seminars during January through
May. Each session was planned for 25 trainees, but the total attendance of all four was
164.
"The demand for training is high," the leader said. "We have received
more than 400 invitations to conduct our seminars."
The challenge is staggering, but "We serve a big God," the leader said.
