Atheists Demand Schools Remove Christian Quotes

(Worthy News) – An atheist group is demanding that a Texas school district remove any Christian quotes from its buildings by claiming that they ‘unconstitutionally promote religion.’

According to the Christian News, the Freedom from Religion Foundation recently objected to the biblical quotes on the walls of buildings belonging to the Mount Vernon Independent School District.

“The quotes on the walls of MVISD are school district speech subject to the Establishment Clause, not private speech posted as part of a public forum. By promoting religious and Christian quotes on school property, MVISD does a disservice to the nearly 30 percent of Americans who are non-Christian, either practicing a minority religion or no religion at all.”

The MVISD has more than 100 quotes on the walls of its public schools, but only seven of them reference Christianity, or the Bible.

Previously, a federal judge in Pennsylvania threw out an FFRF lawsuit against a monument depicting the Ten Commandments on school grounds. FFRF had sued on behalf of a mother and her daughter who allegedly took offense at the monument, but U.S. District Judge Terrence McVerry declared that complainant Marie Schaub had no standing in the lawsuit and dismissed the case.

McVerry said that the lawsuit “seems to have manifested itself only after FFRF became involved in [the] dispute…”
