(Worthy News) – Having blamed both the US and Israel for the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad at the hands of Islamic insurgents Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) on December 1, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated Tuesday that Israelis would be “greatly mistaken” to think the uprising in next-door Syria is now over, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Iran had long been a staunch ally of Assad, who had allowed the Iranian-backed Shiite Hezbollah terror group to operate in Syria. However, JPost noted in a report Monday: “Iran abandoned Bashar al-Assad’s regime in the days before its fall, as did Russia. It appears this was coordinated, and Iran felt that no matter what it did, Assad would not survive. Nevertheless, Assad fled faster than many thought, not even informing close colleagues or some members of his family.”

In a message posted to his recently opened Hebrew language X/Twitter account, Khamenei wrote Tuesday: “The enemies imagine that after the developments in Syria, the uprising is already over. They are greatly mistaken.”

Last week, Khamenei had written in Hebrew on X: “The young Syrians will liberate the territories occupied by the Zionist entity.”

While Iran has lost much of the power it had in the Middle East since the collapse of Assad’s regime, Tehran has stated it is interested in working with a new Syrian government, JPost said.
