(Worthy News) – The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Friday that its forces carried out a precision airstrike on Thursday in Syria’s Dayr az Zawr Province, targeting ISIS leader Abu Yusif. The strike successfully eliminated him along with another ISIS operative. This action comes as the U.S. intensifies efforts to prevent the terrorist group’s attempts to liberate 8,000 ISIS operatives currently detained in Syrian jails.

“This airstrike is part of CENTCOM’s ongoing commitment, along with partners in the region, to disrupt and degrade efforts by terrorists to plan, organize, and conduct attacks against civilians and military personnel from the U.S., our allies, and our partners throughout the region and beyond,” the CENTCOM statement read. “This strike was conducted in an area previously controlled by the Syrian regime and Russians.”

CENTCOM commander Michael Erik Kurilla emphasized the United States’ determination, in collaboration with regional allies and partners, to prevent ISIS from exploiting the current situation in Syria to regroup. He highlighted the group’s intent to free over 8,000 operatives detained in Syrian facilities. He affirmed that U.S. forces will aggressively target ISIS leaders and operatives, including those planning external operations beyond Syria.

“As stated before, the United States — working with allies and partners in the region — will not allow ISIS to take advantage of the current situation in Syria and reconstitute,” Kurilla emphasized.

“ISIS has the intent to break out of detention the over 8,000 ISIS operatives currently being held in facilities in Syria,” he continued. “We will aggressively target these leaders and operatives, including those trying to conduct operations external to Syria.”
