(Worthy News) – The Boko Haram jihadist insurgent group intensified its attacks on Christians in Nigeria’s Borno state earlier this month, International Christian Concern (ICC) reports.

Tens of thousands of Christians in Nigeria have been murdered and/or abducted by Islamic terror groups including Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province, and Fulani jihadist militants since 2009. Millions more Christians have been displaced as these groups seek to establish an Islamic Caliphate in the country.

“In recent years, Boko Haram’s attacks have become increasingly brutal, with Christian communities bearing the brunt of the violence,” ICC said in its report. “The group frequently targets church gatherings, burns down places of worship, and murders Christians who refuse to renounce their faith.”

On January 20, Boko Haram terrorists raided four Christian villages in Chibok, Borno state, killing five people, burning down homes, and causing 4,000 Christians to flee for their lives, ICC reports.

Ibrahim Yana, a Christian farmer who fled the targeted village of Shikarika on January 20, told ICC: “We are living in fear. They burned down our church and homes. Many of us have lost everything.”

Nigeria, which suffers from ongoing Islamic jihadist violence, is currently ranked seventh on the Open Doors World Watch List 2025 of the top 50 countries where Christians face persecution.
