Houthi Missile Triggers Sirens Across Central Israel, Disrupts Holiday and Air Travel

(Worthy News) – A ballistic missile launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen targeted central Israel on Sunday, setting off nationwide sirens just hours before the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. The missile was successfully intercepted by Israeli air defenses, the military confirmed, preventing casualties or damage.

The incoming missile prompted sirens to blare across a wide swath of the country, including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Gush Etzion, the Hebron area, and multiple communities in the central and southern regions. A four-minute advance alert, delivered via smartphone notification, allowed civilians to rush to shelters.

According to Magen David Adom emergency services, no injuries or damage were reported, and no shrapnel has been found at this time.

The attack briefly disrupted air traffic at Ben-Gurion Airport, delaying inbound flights, including EL AL services from London and Boston. Airport officials temporarily suspended takeoffs and landings during the alert window.

The Houthi rebels later claimed responsibility, saying they specifically aimed the missile at Ben-Gurion Airport. This marks the 43rd ballistic missile launched by the Houthis at Israel since the IDF resumed its Gaza offensive on March 18. At least 10 drones have also been deployed from Yemen in that period.

Sunday’s attack also halted the Israeli State Cup final between Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Be’er Sheva, played at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv. The match, paused in the 40th minute, resumed after the all-clear was given. Israeli President Isaac Herzog was present in the crowd. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a known supporter of the Jerusalem team, had been scheduled to attend but canceled amid tightened security arrangements.
