Poll Shows Surge of Faith Among UK Youth, Pointing to a “Quiet Revival”

(Worthy News) – A new YouGov poll has revealed a remarkable increase in belief in God among Britain’s youngest generation, fueling claims of a spiritual “quiet revival” across the nation.

The survey found that 37 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds now say they believe in God, a dramatic rise from just 16 percent in August 2021. Although down from a January 2025 high of 45 percent, the numbers still reflect more than a doubling of faith in only four years.

By contrast, belief levels among older generations have remained relatively steady. Among 25- to 49-year-olds, 25 percent say they believe in God, slightly up from 22 percent in 2019. The 50-64 age group has held at around 27 percent for the past six years, while about one-third of those over 65 continue to affirm belief.

Perhaps even more striking is the decline in outright disbelief among young adults. The proportion of 18- to 24-year-olds who deny any God or higher spiritual power has fallen from 19 percent in 2022 to just 12 percent today.

A Revival Trend Rooted in Recent History

The numbers appear to confirm reports of a broader spiritual resurgence in Britain, often described as a “quiet revival.” In 2023, the Quiet Revival Report documented a 16 percent increase in church attendance among 18-24-year-olds in England and Wales, surprising many who assumed that the nation’s churches were in irreversible decline. Bible sales have also surged in the UK, echoing similar trends abroad in places like Russia, where Christian literature sales rose sharply in recent years.

For decades, Britain has been seen as one of the most secular nations in Europe, with Christianity’s cultural influence declining rapidly since the 1960s. Church attendance plummeted from more than 10 million weekly worshippers in the 1950s to less than 1 million by the early 2000s. Yet, despite this trajectory, surveys now suggest the first generational reversal in faith patterns in more than half a century.

Church Leaders See Signs of Awakening

The Bishop of Lancaster, Rt Rev Jill Duff, told The Telegraph that the data reflects what clergy are already seeing on the ground:

“I’m not surprised by this… It is very much what we are seeing in our churches. There has been a trend in this direction – that the younger you are, the more spiritually open you are. We are seeing a real openness to God and Christianity and especially to the supernatural in the younger age group. I think there is a spiritual awakening.”

While the YouGov poll does not specify which religions respondents identify with, church leaders emphasize that much of the spiritual momentum among youth has been directed toward Christianity, prayer gatherings, and Bible-centered movements.

A Generation Searching

Sociologists note that the pandemic, global unrest, and cultural instability may have accelerated young people’s spiritual search. Many are turning away from atheism and toward faith, not in the cultural religion of their parents, but in personal encounters with God.

Observers suggest that Britain may be witnessing the first shoots of revival not seen since the 18th-century Evangelical Awakening or the Welsh Revival of 1904-1905, when thousands of young people filled churches and reshaped the nation’s spiritual landscape.

If the trend continues, the United Kingdom — long regarded as a post-Christian nation — may again become a center of Christian renewal.
