(Worthy News) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday formally inaugurated Turkey’s integrated air defense network, dubbed the “Steel Dome,” marking what he called a “watershed moment” for the nation’s security and defense industry.

Speaking at defense contractor Aselsan’s headquarters in Ankara, Erdogan declared the project a turning point in Turkey’s march toward military self-sufficiency. “These systems are a show of strength for Turkey,” he said. “In air defense, we are ushering in a new era for our beloved Turkey.”

A Multi-Layered Shield

Launched in August 2024, the Steel Dome project aims to weave together sea-based and land-based air defense platforms and sensors into a seamless national shield. The system, modeled in part after Israel’s Iron Dome, is designed to detect, track, and intercept aerial threats ranging from missiles to drones.

Erdogan revealed that the latest stage of the project includes 47 vehicles worth $460 million, which have now been delivered to the Turkish armed forces. While no date has been given for full operational deployment, the president emphasized the system’s dual purpose: “to inspire confidence in our friends and fear in our enemies.”

Strategic Context

Turkey’s push to develop its own air defense technology comes against the backdrop of regional instability. Ongoing conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, as well as recent Israeli strikes on Iranian territory, have highlighted the vulnerability of national airspace.

“No country that cannot develop its own radar and air defense system can look to its future with confidence in the face of current security challenges, especially in our region,” Erdogan said.

This drive follows Ankara’s controversial 2019 purchase of Russian S-400 missile systems, which led to Turkey being expelled from the U.S.-led F-35 stealth fighter program.

Defense Industry Expansion

In addition to handing over the Steel Dome to the military, Erdogan also inaugurated construction of new Aselsan production facilities, set to open in 2026. The $1.5 billion investment, he said, represents “the largest defense industry project in the history of the republic.”

Erdogan framed the initiative as part of a long-term vision: “In the next 50 years, Turkey will be a country that not only meets its own needs but also leads the world with its technology.”

A Long Quest for Independence

Turkey’s quest for defense self-reliance dates back to 1974, when a U.S. arms embargo following Ankara’s invasion of Cyprus forced the country to accelerate domestic weapons production. Since then, Ankara has steadily grown its indigenous defense sector, producing drones, armored vehicles, and naval assets that have drawn global attention.
