Netanyahu Weighs Sovereignty of Judea and Samaria as UN Prepares for Palestinian State Recognition Push

JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to convene top ministers and aides on Thursday to examine whether Israel should apply sovereignty over parts of Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank, a move tantamount to annexation, amid growing momentum at the United Nations for the recognition of a Palestinian state.

According to Hebrew media, the high-level meeting will focus on potential Israeli responses to a wave of European and Western governments that plan to formally recognize Palestinian statehood during this month’s UN General Assembly. The gathering will include Defense Minister Israel Katz, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

The discussion coincides with diplomatic friction between Washington and Ramallah. Last week, the United States barred Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas and dozens of senior officials from entering the country for the UN gathering. The State Department linked the decision to the PA’s international campaign for recognition and its failure to repudiate terrorism following Hamas’s October 7 massacre fully. PA officials are lobbying for the restrictions to be lifted, warning that silencing Abbas’s speech at the UN would undercut efforts to advance peace.

Meanwhile, Western nations—including Belgium, France, and others—are moving toward recognition of a Palestinian state, often framing the move as a step to preserve the two-state solution. Belgium announced Tuesday that it would pair recognition with sanctions against Israel. French President Emmanuel Macron, together with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will host a “Conference on the Two-State Solution” in New York on September 22, calling it the only viable framework for lasting peace.

Israel and the United States strongly oppose the recognitions, arguing they reward terrorism and undermine negotiations. Earlier this year, the Knesset overwhelmingly backed a symbolic motion in favor of applying sovereignty over parts of the West Bank. Smotrich and Ben Gvir, both of whom openly advocate annexing not only the West Bank but also Gaza, are expected to press Netanyahu to act decisively in Thursday’s discussions.

The sovereignty debate revives an issue Netanyahu first explored under the Trump administration, when he believed he had support for annexing the Jordan Valley. While Washington ultimately held back, Israeli officials now reportedly believe they have quiet approval for a limited annexation plan. The coming weeks, shaped by the UN General Assembly and international recognition drives, may determine whether Netanyahu advances toward such a historic—and deeply controversial—step.

Prophetic Significance

For many Bible-believing Christians, the debate carries weight far beyond geopolitics. The prophet Joel declared that the nations would one day be brought into judgment “on account of My people, My heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations; they have also divided up My land” (Joel 3:2).

As world leaders gather in New York to push for the division of the land through unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, some see a direct connection to Joel’s warning: that God Himself will judge the nations for seeking to partition the inheritance He gave to Israel. In this light, Israel’s internal debate over sovereignty is not only about borders and security—it is a confrontation with the very words of prophecy that speak of the end of the age.
