JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Israel on Wednesday announced that its long-awaited laser air defense system, known as the “Iron Beam,” is now fully operational following a series of advanced tests. The Defense Ministry and developer Rafael Advanced Defense Systems said the first batteries will be delivered to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) by the end of the year, marking a historic first for military technology worldwide.

The system, more than a decade in development since its unveiling in 2014, was tested in recent weeks against rockets, mortars, and drones. Defense officials said the trials concluded successfully at a testing ground in southern Israel, clearing the way for rapid deployment across the country.

During the ongoing war, a lower-powered version of the laser had already been used by the IDF to down Hezbollah drones from Lebanon, reportedly neutralizing dozens of targets.

Honoring a Fallen Soldier

In a symbolic move, the ministry announced the system will carry a new Hebrew name: “Or Eitan” (Eitan’s Light), in honor of Capt. Eitan Oster, 22, a commander in the Egoz Commando Unit killed in battle against Hezbollah in October 2024. Oster’s father, an engineer at the ministry’s research division, was one of the original initiators of the Iron Beam project.

Game-Changer for Air Defense

The Iron Beam does not replace Israel’s missile-based systems like Iron Dome, David’s Sling, or Arrow, but rather supplements them by engaging smaller projectiles. Its advantages are significant: as long as there is a power source, the laser never “runs out” of ammunition, and each interception costs little more than electricity.

“Today, Israel becomes the first country to possess an operational high-power laser defense system,” said Defense Minister Israel Katz. “This is a historic milestone for our defense envelope–fast, precise interception at marginal cost that changes the threat equation.”

Unlike costly interceptors–Iron Dome rockets can cost tens of thousands of shekels and Arrow missiles millions–the Iron Beam fires at a fraction of the price, a breakthrough officials say will help Israel cope with the tens of thousands of rockets, missiles, and drones fired by its enemies.

Limitations and Expansions

The laser’s main drawback is reduced effectiveness in poor weather or heavy cloud cover. Still, the Defense Ministry emphasized its ability to shoot down barrages of threats simultaneously and often before they even cross into Israeli airspace–potentially eliminating the need for bomb shelters in many cases.

The full-scale Iron Beam fires a 100-kilowatt laser at long range, while smaller models have also been developed:

  • Iron Beam M: a mobile truck-mounted version firing a 50-kilowatt beam.
  • Lite Beam: a compact, short-range system firing a 10-kilowatt beam from armored vehicles.
  •  A maritime variant is also under development for naval defense.

In June, Rafael showcased this “family” of laser systems at the Paris Air Show, drawing global attention. While the U.S., China, Russia, and several European powers are also racing to field laser weapons, Israeli officials said Wednesday that Iron Beam is the first system in the world to move from experimental tests into actual field deployment.

Looking Ahead

The Knesset has already approved extensive funding to expand Iron Beam batteries nationwide. Security sources described the announcement as only the beginning of a global shift: “Battlefields will inevitably be filled with cheaper laser platforms, and Israel is leading the way.”

For Israelis weary of sirens and shelters, the ministry said, the new laser defense may prove life-changing. With light-speed interceptions, most incoming threats could be destroyed before warnings are even sounded–making “Or Eitan” both a technological breakthrough and, for many, a symbol of resilience.
