Google Admits Biden Administration Pressured YouTube to Censor COVID, Election Content; Banned Creators Offered Return

WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – Google has confirmed in a letter to Congress that the Biden administration pressured YouTube to censor content about COVID-19 and the 2020 election that did not violate the platform’s policies, raising sharp concerns over government interference in free speech.
The admission came in a letter from Google attorney Daniel Donovan to House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who has led a years-long investigation into Big Tech censorship.
“It is unacceptable and wrong when any government, including the Biden administration, attempts to dictate how the company moderates content,” Donovan wrote. “The company has consistently fought against those efforts on First Amendment grounds.”
Biden Pressure Campaign
According to Google, senior White House officials “conducted repeated and sustained outreach” to the company, urging it to remove user-generated content related to COVID that did not violate YouTube’s rules. The letter confirmed that Biden’s administration created “a political atmosphere that sought to influence the actions of platforms based on their concerns regarding misinformation.”
Jordan said the revelations show that Biden pressured Google “to censor Americans and remove content that did not violate YouTube’s policies,” which he described as “unacceptable and wrong.”
The pressure campaigns included efforts to silence claims that COVID originated from Chinese lab experiments and to suppress criticism of vaccine mandates. Biden officials also pressed for censorship of commentary about flaws in the U.S. election system during the 2020 presidential race.
Critics note that since then, the public has learned of major outside influences on that election, including more than $400 million in grants from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, which were funneled to local election officials, and the FBI’s false portrayal of the Hunter Biden laptop scandal as Russian disinformation.
YouTube to Reinstate Banned Creators
In a reversal, Google announced that it will allow creators previously banned from YouTube for “political speech violations” related to COVID-19 or elections to return to the platform.
“Reflecting the company’s commitment to free expression, YouTube will provide an opportunity for all creators to rejoin the platform if the company terminated their channels for repeated violations of COVID-19 and election integrity policies that are no longer in effect,” Donovan wrote.
This shift could impact both everyday users and high-profile conservative figures such as Dan Bongino, Sebastian Gorka, and Steve Bannon, who were permanently banned in recent years.
The company also pledged to stop relying on third-party “fact-checkers,” which Jordan blasted as “a leftist disinformation machine” used to silence dissent during the pandemic and election controversies.
Warning on Global Free Speech
Google’s letter additionally warned of growing threats to free expression abroad, specifically criticizing Europe’s new Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act as attempts to pressure platforms into stricter censorship.
Despite its past actions, Google insisted it “is committed to doing its part to continue to keep the digital ecosystem safe, reliable, and open to free expression,” and claimed that “bias toward a particular viewpoint is not in line with the company’s values.”
Jordan hailed the development as a victory for free speech: “Due to our oversight efforts, Google commits to offer ALL creators previously kicked off YouTube due to political speech violations to return to the platform,” he wrote in an announcement on X.
