NEW YORK (Worthy News) – Democrat Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assemblyman from Queens, has been elected mayor of New York City, marking a historic moment in the city’s political history. Hundreds of his supporters filled the Brooklyn Paramount Theater on Tuesday night, erupting in celebration as results confirmed his victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani, a self-described Democratic Socialist, becomes the first Muslim and the first East Indian American to lead the nation’s largest city — as well as its youngest mayor in more than a century. Outside the theater, crowds chanted “Free Palestine” and “Whose streets? Our streets!,” underscoring the deeply activist tone of his campaign.

He will replace outgoing Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped out of the race in September but remained on the ballot. Mamdani entered the general election as the clear favorite following a 12-point victory in the ranked-choice Democratic primary earlier this year.

Jewish Groups React to Mamdani’s Victory

The election has already sparked sharp reactions among American Jewish organizations, given Mamdani’s well-documented criticism of Israel and his alignment with anti-Zionist movements.

In a rare political statement, the UJA-Federation of New York said it would “hold Zohran Mamdani accountable” for his views and policies affecting the Jewish community.

“We recognize that voters are animated by a range of issues, but we cannot ignore that the Mayor-elect holds core beliefs fundamentally at odds with our community’s deepest convictions and most cherished values,” the UJA said.

“We call on Mayor-elect Mamdani and all elected officials to govern with humility, inclusivity, and a deep respect for the diversity of views and experiences that define our city.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) also issued a statement calling Mamdani’s record “deeply disturbing on issues of concern to the Jewish community.”

“We expect the mayor of the city with the largest Jewish population in the world to stand unequivocally against antisemitism in all its varied forms,” the ADL said. “In the months ahead, we will hold the Mamdani administration to this basic standard… ADL will be relentless and unyielding in ensuring the safety and security of all Jewish New Yorkers.”

Meanwhile, the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) condemned the outcome as “a deeply distressing result for New Yorkers, particularly Jewish New Yorkers.”

“Democrats have shamefully endorsed and elected an antisemite to run the largest city in America with the largest number of Jews in the country,” the RJC charged.

A Prophetic Undercurrent

New York City is home to nearly one million Jews, making it the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. The election of Mamdani — coming just years after London elected its own Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan — has sparked reflections within faith circles about biblical prophecy and the future of the Jewish diaspora.

Some observers cite Jeremiah 16:16, which reads:

“Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the Lord, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.”

As tensions rise and politics shift in Western cities with historic Jewish populations, many are asking whether this moment could signal the beginning of a broader movement — a prophetic “return to Zion”, as Jewish communities reassess their place amid changing cultural and political winds.
