(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump warned that New York’s political troubles may deepen after socialist-backed candidates swept several Democratic congressional primaries in New York City, delivering a major victory to Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the far-left wing of the Democratic Party.
The results marked a striking rebuke of Democratic establishment leaders and underscored Mamdani’s growing influence in America’s largest city, where his allies campaigned on abolishing ICE, taxing the wealthy, and taking a harder line against Israel over the war in Gaza.
“Many communists running in badly failing Blue States,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The votes seem to have them doing quite well against each other. The bad news is that history has conclusively shown that the downtrodden states that they will soon be running will only get worse.”
In a follow-up post, Trump declared, “America the Beautiful will NEVER be a communist country.”
Among the biggest upsets, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist and former Mamdani campaign staffer, defeated longtime Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in New York’s 13th Congressional District.
Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, also backed by Mamdani, defeated incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman, while state Assemblymember Claire Valdez won the Democratic primary to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez in New York’s 7th Congressional District, which includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens.
Because the districts are heavily Democratic, the primary winners are strongly positioned to win the general election in November, potentially expanding the number of Democratic Socialists of America-aligned lawmakers in Congress.
The victories also sent a clear message to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who campaigned against Mamdani’s candidates but saw establishment-backed contenders fall short.
Mamdani celebrated the results as proof that his movement did not end with his mayoral victory.
“A year ago, it was not the end of a political movement. It was the beginning,” Mamdani said at Valdez’s election night event in Brooklyn, where supporters chanted, “DSA! DSA!”
The sweep comes as Democrats prepare for November’s midterm elections, when control of Congress will be at stake during the final two years of Trump’s term. For party leaders, the results present a growing dilemma: how to hold together a coalition increasingly divided between traditional liberals and a younger socialist movement openly seeking to remake the party’s priorities.
While socialist-backed candidates had a strong night in New York City, the left-wing surge was not replicated everywhere. More moderate Democrats prevailed in several other primary contests across the country, suggesting that New York remains an especially concentrated battleground in the party’s ideological war.
Still, Trump and Republicans are likely to use the New York results as fresh evidence that Democrats are moving sharply left on immigration, Israel, policing, and economic policy.
