DAMASCUS, Syria (Worthy News) – Syrian security forces have intercepted a large shipment of advanced weapons near the Iraqi border that authorities said was intended for the Hezbollah terrorist organization in Lebanon.

Syria’s Interior Ministry said specialized units discovered a suspicious vehicle parked in the border area Thursday and searched it before the cargo could enter Syrian territory.

Inside, authorities reportedly found long-range missiles, guided anti-tank missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and other military equipment. Preliminary evidence indicated that the shipment was intended to travel across Syria and into Lebanon for Hezbollah, according to the ministry.

Officials did not disclose the precise location of the seizure, the number of weapons recovered, or the identities of those responsible for transporting the shipment.

The Syrian Interior Ministry said investigators were working to identify everyone involved and dismantle the networks connected to the attempted smuggling operation.

The seizure represents another significant challenge to Hezbollah’s efforts to restore its missile, drone, and anti-tank capabilities following sustained military pressure from Israel.

For years, Iran supplied Hezbollah through a regional weapons corridor stretching across Iraq and Syria into Lebanon. Syria’s former government under Bashar Assad permitted Iran and its allied militias to operate throughout the country, giving Tehran a vital land route to Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon.

Since Assad’s removal in December 2024, Syria’s new authorities have sought to break apart Iran-linked smuggling networks and reassert government control over territory previously used by Hezbollah and other armed groups. Syrian forces have uncovered weapons depots, drug operations, and smuggling routes connected to Iran-backed organizations.

Thursday’s interception followed several reported attempts this year to move rockets, anti-tank weapons, explosives, and other military supplies through Syria toward Lebanon.

The Syrian Interior Ministry said protecting the country’s borders and sovereignty remained among its highest priorities.

Authorities warned that they would not allow Syria to be used as a transit corridor or launching point for weapons trafficking and other activities threatening Syria or its neighbors.

The development may strengthen efforts by Lebanon and international mediators to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding an independent military arsenal outside the control of the Lebanese government.

For Israel, the seizure marks a potentially significant disruption of the supply network that has long enabled Hezbollah to threaten Israeli communities with missiles, drones, and precision-guided weapons.

Despite the interception, Israeli officials remain deeply cautious about Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and the direction of his government. Al-Sharaa previously led Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamist organization that grew out of al-Qaeda’s former Syrian affiliate, the al-Nusra Front. Although he severed ties with al-Qaeda in 2016 and has since sought international legitimacy, Israeli leaders have indicated that his transformation from jihadist commander to national statesman must be judged by actions rather than diplomatic assurances.

Israeli security officials are particularly concerned about the continued presence of armed Islamist factions and foreign fighters inside Syria, as well as the possibility that militant networks could become embedded within the country’s emerging military and political institutions. The seizure of weapons intended for Hezbollah may be viewed in Jerusalem as a positive step, but it is unlikely to erase years of distrust surrounding al-Sharaa’s past, his former alliances, and the ideology of some groups that helped bring him to power.
