Iran Quietly Prepared for Wider War While Pursuing Talks With Washington
Iran’s leadership used a two-month diplomatic opening to strengthen the Revolutionary Guard, rebuild missile and drone capabilities, and prepare for a prolonged regional confrontation, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation.

(Worthy News) – Iran’s rulers were quietly preparing for a broader and potentially prolonged Middle East war even as Tehran publicly engaged in diplomatic efforts with the United States, according to an exclusive investigation by The Wall Street Journal.
The Journal, citing Arab intelligence officials and others familiar with Iran’s military preparations, reported Monday that Tehran’s leadership viewed a June 17 memorandum of understanding with the Trump administration not as the beginning of lasting peace, but with deep suspicion — fearing Washington might be buying time before launching another major attack.
During the two months that followed, Iran reportedly expanded the authority of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, installed hard-line security officials, accelerated missile and drone preparations, strengthened cooperation with allied militias and positioned forces for operations beyond Iran’s borders.
The strategy increasingly appears to be moving into the open.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters on Monday that Tehran had shifted from a defensive posture toward a “fully offensive” strategy as negotiations with Washington stalled. The official warned that Iran was prepared to escalate operations in the Strait of Hormuz and across the wider region.
Iran Expands the Battlefield
Iran’s growing confrontation with Washington is no longer confined to Iranian territory.
Iranian forces and Tehran-aligned groups have increased pressure along several strategic fronts, including the Strait of Hormuz, Iraq, Yemen and the Red Sea. The Journal reported that Iran’s leadership increasingly views regional pressure as a means of forcing Washington and its allies to accept Tehran as a power capable of imposing significant military and economic costs.
Reuters separately reported earlier this month that Iran has been widening its pressure campaign against maritime commerce and critical energy routes, seeking negotiating leverage by increasing the economic consequences of continued conflict.
That strategy carries enormous global implications.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — historically a passageway for roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies — has slowed dramatically amid renewed Iranian attacks and threats. Reuters reported that only five commodity vessels crossed the strait Saturday, with none recorded Sunday, compared with 31 during the previous weekend.
Iran has also warned Gulf nations that their energy infrastructure could be targeted if the United States launches additional strikes against Iranian territory.
Revolutionary Guard Gains Influence
One of the most consequential developments described by the Journal is the growing influence of the Revolutionary Guard inside Iran’s wartime government.
Rather than weakening the regime’s most powerful military institution, months of fighting appear to have strengthened the IRGC’s position within the Islamic Republic’s security apparatus. Iranian leaders have reportedly placed hard-line figures into key positions while preparing the country economically and militarily for a conflict that could continue for an extended period.
Yet that strategy comes with substantial domestic risk.
Iran is already suffering severe economic pressure after nearly six months of war. Reuters reported Monday that annual inflation has reached roughly 66 percent as infrastructure damage, disrupted trade, currency weakness and tightening sanctions place growing strain on ordinary Iranians. Tehran is reportedly increasingly concerned that worsening economic hardship could trigger another wave of anti-government unrest.
Diplomacy Gives Way to Escalation
The June agreement between Washington and Tehran was intended to reduce hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and create a pathway toward negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. But its 60-day diplomatic window expired August 17 without a comprehensive settlement.
Instead of a breakthrough, both sides now appear to be preparing for greater confrontation.
For Iran, the calculation described by the Wall Street Journal is particularly significant: Tehran may believe surviving sustained American and Israeli military pressure — while maintaining the ability to threaten oil routes, regional governments and U.S. interests — could ultimately force its adversaries to negotiate on terms more favorable to the Islamic Republic.
The danger is that a strategy designed to produce leverage could instead ignite the broader regional war that diplomats have spent months attempting to prevent.
