Trump Threatens 50% Tariffs on Canadian Cars, Trucks and Steel as Trade Fight Deepens

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump sharply escalated his trade battle with Canada on Monday, threatening to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel to 50% beginning Jan. 1, 2027, after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa collapsed late last week.

Trump accused Canada of taking advantage of U.S. trade policy and declared on social media, “WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!” The warning places one of North America’s most integrated industries — auto manufacturing — directly in the crosshairs of a widening dispute between two longtime allies. Reuters reported that the threatened tariffs would cover cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel from Canada, marking a major escalation after earlier tariff disputes over goods including dairy, alcohol and vehicles.

The White House has argued that Canada’s trade practices discriminate against American commerce, particularly in autos and dairy. A July presidential proclamation imposed additional duties on certain Canadian motor vehicle imports, while an August order temporarily suspended some duties as negotiations continued.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has accused Washington of making unacceptable demands and is expected to answer with retaliatory tariffs, according to the Associated Press. The dispute has already triggered warnings from business leaders and lawmakers that a prolonged trade war could raise consumer prices, disrupt cross-border supply chains and unsettle border-state economies.

The auto sector is especially vulnerable because production is spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico under the North American trade framework. Vehicles and parts often cross borders multiple times before final assembly, meaning tariffs could hit manufacturers, suppliers, dealers and buyers on both sides of the border.

While Trump has long argued that tariffs are necessary to defend American workers and restore fair trade, critics say the pressure campaign could backfire if Canada retaliates against U.S. agricultural, energy or industrial exports. Wall Street Journal reporting noted that Canadian officials and trade experts view some of the levies as conflicting with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the trade pact Trump negotiated during his first term.

The latest threat signals that Trump is willing to use tariffs not merely as an economic tool, but as leverage in a broader fight over sovereignty, market access and the future of North American manufacturing.
