WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News) – President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” adding a symbolic but sharp new twist to a growing trade war between the United States and Canada.
The White House said the move recognizes the lake’s importance to American commerce, shipping, freshwater resources, and Great Lakes history. Trump told reporters the change would take effect immediately for U.S. federal use, though Canada quickly rejected the move.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would continue to use Lake Ontario’s historic name, noting that the name predates both the United States and Canadian Confederation. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also pushed back, saying her state would not use the new name.
The renaming comes after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa collapsed, triggering 50% U.S. tariffs on a range of Canadian goods. Canada has pledged retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, raising fears of a prolonged economic fight between two of the world’s closest trading partners.
Lake Ontario, the easternmost of the Great Lakes, straddles the U.S.-Canada border and is shared by New York and Ontario. While the order changes how the U.S. government refers to the lake, it does not compel Canada or international bodies to adopt the name.
The dispute now blends economics, nationalism, and diplomacy, as Trump seeks to press Canada for concessions while Ottawa signals it will not be bullied into a one-sided deal.
What began as a tariff fight has now spilled into geography itself, turning one of North America’s most recognizable landmarks into the latest flashpoint in a deteriorating relationship.
