House Passes Stopgap Funding Bill to Avert Government Shutdown Before Midterms

(Worthy News) – The U.S. House of Representatives passed a short-term government funding bill Tuesday, sending the measure to President Donald Trump’s desk and averting the immediate threat of a federal shutdown before the November midterm elections.

The continuing resolution keeps federal agencies funded through December 11, giving lawmakers additional time to negotiate full-year spending bills for fiscal year 2027. Government funding had been set to expire at the end of September.

The bill passed with broad bipartisan support, as leaders in both parties sought to avoid a disruptive shutdown weeks before voters head to the polls. Congress has yet to complete any of the 12 annual appropriations bills that fund the federal government.

House Republicans framed the measure as a clean, straightforward extension that keeps essential services operating while buying more time for negotiations. Some conservatives opposed the bill, arguing it failed to address deeper concerns over federal spending and the national debt.

The measure now moves to President Trump, whose signature would push the next major funding fight until after the midterms, when control of Congress will be decided.
