Myanmar May Pass Law Against Mixed Marriages

NAYPYIDAW, MYANMAR (Worthy News)– Nearly 100 multi-ethnic groups in Myanmar have rejected a proposal by Buddhist extremists to restrict interfaith marriage and other religious rights and freedoms, according to AsiaNews.
Myanmar’s latest reform initiative includes a proposal to amend laws on mixed marriages that “are not in agreement with the goals of peaceful coexistence between all faiths”.
Myanmar President Thein Sein has supported the initiative based on the supposed “common sense that women are generally physically and mentally weaker than men and need to be guided.”
Women’s organizations and rights groups said that they intend to continue the fight for the dignity of women in Myanmar. Instead of the current reform initiative, they recommend that the state pass laws requiring the registration of all marriages without regard to race, sex and religion.
