Kenya: Shabaab Jihadists Close Schools

(Worthy News)– Almost 100 schools in northern Kenya have been closed as teachers — many of them Christians — are too afraid to teach as long as al-Shabaab’s jihadists continue to attack educational institutions with impunity.
According to Barnabas Aid, in April al-Shabaab jihadists massacred 148 Christian students at Garissa University. And in November, 28 bus passengers — mostly teachers on their way home for the Christmas holidays — were killed in Mandera after Christians were separated from the other riders and shot.
In Mandera county, the acting education director said they were being forced to use untrained teachers; as a result, many Mandera students are concerned that the jihadists are destroying their future.
The Kenyan National Union of Teachers said that more than 1,000 teachers are refusing to return to teach in regions where the terrorist threat remains great.
Joseph Alessandro, Coadjutor Bishop of Garissa Diocese, said they were doing their best to keep church schools open after 95 public schools have closed indefinitely.
