Algeria: Church told to stop worship services
(Worthy News) – A church in Algeria’s northern Kabylie region where St. Augustine had preached during the fifth century was ordered to stop all religious activities last month.
According to Morning Star News, Algerian congregations — many of which have Christians from Islamic backgrounds — have come under increasing scrutiny by the state.
For example, a law was passed in 2006 that forbade non-Muslims from attending unregistered churches also requires its congregations to obtain official permission in order to use buildings for worship. As a result, many congregations resort to renting space through a third party despite the fact that the nation’s new constitution guarantees freedom of worship.
