‘The Buck Stops Here’: Boris Johnson Elected UK Prime Minister, Promises Brexit With or Without Deal

(Worthy News) – Boris Johnson became the new Prime Minister of the U.K. on Tuesday, beating Jeremy hunt in a bid to replace Theresa May for conservative party leadership.
May, who announced her resignation on May 24th after failing to deliver Brexit, formally submitted it to the Queen the same day as Johnson was sworn in amid promises to take the UK out of the EU with or without a deal to cushion potential trade fallout.
“The British people have had enough of waiting and the time has come to act to give strong leadership,” Johnson said in his first speech as Prime Minister on the steps of Downing Street. “Yes, there will be difficulties … but if there is one thing that has really sapped the confidence of business is not the decisions we have taken, it is our refusal to take decisions.”
May had been elected Prime Minister to oversee the process by which the U.K. would honor its commitment to a 2016 referendum in which 70% of Britons voted 52% to 48% to leave the EU, but sought an extension to the March 29th deadline when negotiations with the EU for an amicable divorce failed.
Johnson has been mum on details of his path to a smooth Brexit, but resigned as foreign minister in 2018 in protest to May’s plan, which he said would make Britain a “colony” of the EU.
