(Worthy News) – President Trump gave his support to Hong Kong protestors Wednesday, signing the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act into law.

The bill passed with overwhelming support in the House and Senate, and allows US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to strip the Special Autonomous Region of its special trading status if it is found not to be sufficiently autonomous from the communist mainland.

“The U.S. now has new and meaningful tools to deter further influence and interference from Beijing into Hong Kong’s internal affairs,” US Senator Marco Rubio said.

More than six months of protests in Hong Kong began with opposition to an extradition bill that would have allowed communist China to try Hong Kong criminals in its own courts, which demonstrators saw as a ploy to abridge the “one country, two systems” doctrine that has governed there since 1997.
