(Worthy News) – The details of 15 million Iranian debit cards were leaked online when banks were burned during protests that began November 15 for a 50% spike in fuel prices.

Iranian news outlet Aftab news called the hack the “largest financial scam in Iran’s history,” with almost one-fifth of its citizens affected.

Potentially adding fuel to the fire of Iranian suspicions of US involvement in protests the US estimates have seen 1,000 casualties, cybersecurity company ClearSky said the sophistication of the attack pointed to hostile foreign “state intelligence services” as the culprit.

Many of the banks affected in the protests were sanctioned by the US in 2018 for transferring money to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, which the US also designated a terrorist organization in April.
