Brushfires in Australia could become “mega blaze”

(Worthy News) – Australian brushfires have burned over 12 million acres in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, encompassing an area twice as big as Maryland, as officials over the weekend suggested the inferno may metastasize into a “mega blaze.”

Though the Australian brushfire season normally only stretches into March, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said wildfires that have already killed 25 people and destroyed 2,000 homes were expected to continue burning “for months to come.”

“These blazes certainly are concerning,” David Bruce of Emergency Management Victoria said Monday.

In addition to the millions of dollars it has already shelled out, the Australian government promised this week to devote another $2 billion toward the containment of the fires.
