(Worthy News) – Maryland became the 28th U.S. state to enact a mandatory quarantine on Monday, ordering residents to stay at home with the exception of “buying food and medical reasons.”

Any violations to the edict for Maryland residents will merit a misdemeanor leading to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine as of 8 p.m. Monday.

“We have reached a critical turning point in the fight to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Republic governor Larry Hogan. “We are no longer asking or suggesting that Marylanders stay at home. We are directing them to do so.”

So far, 250 million Americans comprising around three-quarters of the U.S. population are facing quarantine orders.
