US Law Enforcement Officers Join Protests Against Police Brutality

(Worthy News) – Even as rioting continued across the US this weekend, police squads were seen joining with peaceful protests against the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis on May 25, Forbes reported. Especially poignantly for some, police officers were seen and photographed kneeling in solidarity with protestors and the anti-racism movement.

This gesture was a salute to the peaceful protest movement against police brutality and racial inequality started by black NFL player Colin Kaepernick in 2016: trying to highlight the issues, Kaepernick and other players “took a knee” instead of standing for the American national anthem before games.

Among numerous examples of solidarity this weekend, Forbes reported that in Ferguson, Missouri, a police squad took a knee for nine-and-a-half minutes in Floyd’s memory as crowds cheered.

Taking a knee in Santa Cruz, California, Police Chief Andy Mills tweeted he had done so “in memory of George Floyd & bringing attention to police violence against Black people.”

In Kansas City, Missouri, one white officer, and one black officer were photographed holding a sign that said “end police brutality.” 

In Fargo, North Dakota, an officer held hands with protest organizers while holding up a sign that read: “We are one race…The HUMAN race.”
