(Worthy News) – The Israeli military (IDF) has confirmed in a statement that it struck Hamas terrorist group targets in Gaza early Friday morning, in response to six rockets fired from the Strip toward southern Israel during the night, the Jerusalem Post reports. The IDF confirmed that tanks and IAF aircraft struck underground Hamas infrastructure and militia posts early Friday.

Sirens had sounded on Friday morning in the Israeli towns of Nahal Oz and Alumim.

In its statement, The IDF Spokesperson Unit’s said: “The IDF takes all terrorist activity against Israeli territory very seriously and is prepared and ready to act as much as necessary against attempts to harm Israeli citizens and their sovereignty. The terrorist organization Hamas bears responsibility for what is happening in and out of the Gaza Strip, and will bear the consequences of terrorist acts against Israeli citizens.”

The rockets had followed an earlier IDF response to Hamas’ weeks-long campaign of daily launching incendiary balloons into Israel. Fires have burned up large sections of land and, on Thursday, balloons caused at least 26 fires across southern Israel.

The IDF has struck Hamas targets several times and has tightened economic restrictions on Gaza, the Jerusalem Post reports.

The Qatari envoy to Gaza Mohammed Al-Emadi attended a meeting with Hamas leaders in Gaza this week, in an effort to reduce the tensions. However, a Hamas source told the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen news that the talks failed because Israel demands “calm in return for calm” while the terrorist group insists on the blockade on Gaza being lifted, the Jerusalem Post reported.
