(Worthy News) – New York City police arrested several dozen people they said had tried to violently “hijack” an otherwise peaceful demonstration on Wednesday night, the Washington Examiner reports. While peaceful protestors demanded that every vote cast in the November 3 election is counted, police said others present had set fire to trash, thrown eggs, and other objects, and fought with officers. Activists condemned the arrests, including Joo-Hyun Kang, executive director of Communities United for Police Reform, who tweeted: “This is police violence.”

Demanding that all votes be counted, hundreds of protestors marched to Washington Square Park in Manhattan, where a smaller protest against police misconduct was taking place, the Examiner said.

A number of people threw eggs at police officers and one person broke a store window, the NYPD said. Police reportedly found a knife, firecrackers, spray paint, and a stun gun during the course of the protests.

There were also reports of stand-offs between police and protestors near Union Square: one person present filmed law enforcement in helmets and tactical equipment surrounding protestors, the Examiner reports.

In a tweet about the arrests, the NYPD said: “We support everyone’s right to self-expression, but setting fires puts others at risk and will not be tolerated.”
