(Worthy News) – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday that the Palestinians are prepared to resume talks with Israel and that fresh negotiations should be based on resolutions passed by the United Nations on the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Jerusalem Post reports. Abbas made the announcement during a visit to Ramallah by Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha González.

The Jerusalem Post notes that Abbas’ announcement comes amid pressure from Egypt for the Palestinians to resume talks with Israel. Tarek Tayel, the Egyptian envoy to Ramallah, recently met with Palestinian leadership officials to discuss Cairo’s work to bring the Palestinians and the Israelis back to negotiations “on the basis of a two-state solution.”

According to Jerusalem Post sources, Tayel told the Palestinians that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is adamant the two sides should resume talks in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Abbas reportedly briefed the Spanish Foreign Minister on the Palestinian situation and thanked Spain for its continued support of the peace process, the Jerusalem Post said.

For her part, González gave Abbas a letter from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in which he “affirmed the distinguished bilateral relations between the two countries and his country’s keenness to strengthen them, and to continue to provide support to the political process based on the principle of the two-state solution,” the PA’s official news agency WAFA reported.
