Argentina judge suspends new law legalizing abortion: unborn child has right to life

chile agentina paraguay uraguay worthy ministries(Worthy News) – A judge in Argentina has suspended the country’s new law legalizing abortion, saying the unborn child has the right to life, Lifesite News reports. Suspension of the law’s application was ordered Thursday by Judge Marta Aucar in the Chaco Province.

Argentina’s new law allowing limited abortions came into effect on December 31. The law allows abortions for any reason up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, and later in cases of rape or threats to the mother’s life or health. The law also requires doctors to either carry out a requested abortion or refer the woman to a physician who will, Lifesite News said.

In her ruling, Judge Aucar said abortions “restrict, undermine, abuse, limit and alter” the “right to life of the unborn child, [which is] protected by our legal system from conception,” Lifesite News said.
In a statement about the ruling, the Corporation of Catholic Lawyers called on other judges to follow Aucar’s example “without being intimidated by political pressure, to comply with the oath to ‘faithfully observe and enforce’ the national constitution, provincial constitutions, and laws.”

It is anticipated that abortion activists will appeal Aucar’s ruling to the Chaco Appeals Chamber and possibly to the Supreme Court of Justice, Lifesite News said.
