Qatar announces $500 million to rebuild Gaza

(Worthy News) – Qatar has announced it will provide $500 million for the reconstruction of Gaza, following this month’s 11-day war between Israel and the Hamas Islamic terror group which controls the Strip, the Times of Israel reports. Qatar is a major supporter of Hamas; according to a 2019 report by Ha’aretz, the Qataris gave Gaza $1 billion between 2012-2018, with Israel’s consent.

In a tweet Wednesday, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said: “The state of Qatar announces $500 million in support for the reconstruction of Gaza.”

According to the official QNA news agency, the funds are being pledged to help Gaza residents “face the life challenges posed by the recent Israeli attacks, and to contribute to the reconstruction of service facilities in Gaza… in addition to the homes that were destroyed.”

Al-Thani also said in a separate statement that Qatar is supporting the Palestinians in order to reach “a just and lasting solution by establishing their independent state in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative (a 2002 Saudi-backed peace initiative),” the ToI said.

A number of other countries have also pledged funds to help rebuild Gaza in the wake of this month’s fighting. Egypt has pledged $500 million and the US has pledged $37 million in immediate relief funding, with more to come for development, the ToI reports.
