(Worthy News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) is developing a digital wallet that could be used as international certification of COVID-19 vaccination in a similar way to the yellow fever vaccination card that has been used for many years, the WHO panel of doctors said at a July 12 virtual press conference.

WHO is in the process of producing standards and guidelines for the digital certification, the panel said Monday. However, the panel attested, the organization does not promote vaccine passports, especially as many parts of the world have limited access to vaccines.

“Vaccine cannot be a precondition or should not be a precondition for travel or entry because it’s essentially then a very inequitable situation,” WHO chief scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan explained.

In any event, the WHO guidelines for producing digital certification that is interoperable between countries across national borders are expected to be ready within a week to ten days, the panel said. “We will be able to publish these guidelines so that countries can adopt these standards when they develop their own certification of vaccination,” Swaminathan said.

“We encourage all countries to adopt [the guidelines] because it’s good to have an interoperable certificate and indeed the yellow fever vaccination card that was mentioned is something that all countries around the world have used for many years,” Swaminathan added.
