(Worthy News) – A new survey published in the American Worldview Inventory 2021 shows that 69% of Americans self-identify as “Christian” but many hold views that contradict the Bible, Christian Headlines (CH) reports.

Conducted by the Cultural Research Center (CRC) at Arizona Christian University in February 2021, the survey polled 2,000 nationally representative American adults, CH said.

The survey found that self-identifying Christians hold to basic aspects of Christianity, but they also have unbiblical views: such viewpoints include that people are basically good (72 percent), that there is no absolute truth (52 percent), and that the Holy Spirit is not a real, living Person (58 percent). Moreover, 64 percent of self-identifying Christians said all faiths are equally valuable, and 57 percent said they believe in karma, CH reports.

Concerning issues of societal importance like gay marriage and abortion, 42 percent of self-identified Christians held conservative views, 36 percent of Christians held to a liberal viewpoint, and 26 percent had moderate views.

In a statement about the results, CRC lead researcher Dr. George Barna observed that the term “Christian” has now become “somewhat of a generic term rather than a name that reflects a deep commitment to passionately pursuing and being like Jesus Christ.”
