(Worthy News) – A new poll has shown that 61% of Americans who self-identify as born-again Christians believe that all religious faiths have equal value when it comes to going to heaven, the Christian Post (CP) reports.

The poll was carried out by the Cultural Research Center of Arizona Christian University and published in its recently released American Worldview Inventory, CP said. The survey was taken of 2,000 nationally representative US adults who identify as born-again Christians.

The study shows that while an estimated 176 million American adults identify as born-again Christians, 62% reject Biblical teaching that the Holy Spirit is a real Person, and instead believe He is just a symbol of God’s power, presence of purity, CP said.

Moreover, 60% of self-identifying born-again Christians said that a person can earn their way into heaven through doing good works or being good, CP reports.

Commenting on the findings that a majority of self-identifying born-again Christians do not hold to essential tenets of the faith, George Barna, the lead researcher at the Cultural Research Center, said in a statement: “Too often, it seems, people who are simply religious, or regular churchgoers, or perhaps people who want a certain reputation or image embrace the label ‘Christian,’ regardless of their spiritual life and intentions. ‘Christian’ has become somewhat of a generic term rather than a name that reflects a deep commitment to passionately pursuing and being like Jesus Christ.”
