(Worthy News) – The US Supreme Court last week agreed to hear an appeal brought by Christian group Camp Constitution against a lower court ruling that allowed state authorities in Boston to refuse to display a flag with a Christian cross over its city hall, Reuters reports.

Camp Constitution asserts Boston is violating their First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and religion by refusing to fly their flag.

Camp Constitution is a volunteer group that teaches on American history and current events, Reuters reports. The organization filed suit against Boston after officials denied their request to fly a Christian flag over city hall in 2017.

The city has displayed flags from many other private organizations, including the LGBT pride flag. It had never previously denied other groups’ requests to display a flag, Reuters said.

The city of Boston, however, argues that the First Amendment also prohibits government endorsement of religion, Reuters reports. The Boston-based 1st US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in January that displaying the Christian flag would be a form of government speech.
The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in early 2022, and is expected to rule on the case by the end of June next year, Reuters said.
