BUFFALO (Worthy News) – A gunman wearing military-style clothing and body armor has been detained after he opened fire with a rifle at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing at least 10 people, police said Saturday.

The shooting at Tops Friendly Market is the latest in a series of deadly shootings in the United States. Police were investigating whether the shooting was racially motivated.

The supermarket is in a predominately Black neighborhood, about 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of downtown Buffalo. The area is primarily residential, with a Family Dollar store and fire station near the store.

Witnesses described the suspected shooter as a white male in his late teens or early 20s, wearing full camouflage and a black helmet, who was carrying an apparent rifle.

“He was standing there with the gun to his chin. We were like, what the heck is going on? Why does this kid have a gun to his face?” one witness Braedyn Kephart told reporters.

One of those killed was a recently retired Buffalo police officer who was working security for the store, reported The Buffalo News paper.

Shonnell Harris, an operation manager at the supermarket, told the newspaper that she thought she heard 70 shots. She said she ran through the store, falling several times, before fleeing out the back.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul offered assistance to local officials, saying she was “closely monitoring the shooting.”

It comes amid a debate on shootings in the United States. As of May 14, at least 15,825 people have died from gun violence this year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

The American Public Health Association says gun violence in the U.S. a leading cause of premature death in the country, responsible for more than 38,000 deaths annually.
