WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted last year of murdering Black man George Floyd, was sentenced to 21 years in prison Thursday on a separate federal charge.

He got the prison term from a U.S. federal judge for allegedly violating Floyd’s civil rights when he pressed his knees into the man’s neck and back and ignored his cries for help.

The murder of the 46-year-old Floyd on May 25, 2020, prompted sometimes violent Black Lives Matter protests in the U.S. and worldwide.

U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson sharply criticized Chauvin telling the former Minneapolis police officer that what he did was “simply wrong” and “offensive.”

“I really don’t know why you did what you did,” Magnuson said. “To put your knee on a person’s neck until they expired is simply wrong. … Your conduct is wrong, and it is offensive.”

Yet trial observers said Magnuson’s sentence was at the low end of the 20 to 25 years called for by prosecutors in a plea agreement in which Chauvin.

Under the agreement, he will serve the federal sentence while serving his 22 1/2-year sentence on state charges of murder and manslaughter.
