(Worthy News) – The US military on Tuesday carried out a series of airstrikes on Iran-backed forces in Syria, emphasizing these were conducted solely to protect American troops in the region and not to escalate tensions, the Washington Examiner reports.

Conducted in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor region, the precision strikes targeted infrastructure that is understood to be used by militant groups with ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Examiner reports.

In a statement confirming the strikes, Col. Joe Buccino of the US Central Command said President Joe Biden had ordered the strikes pursuant to Article II authority to protect and defend US personnel by preventing attacks by Iran-backed groups.

“These precision strikes are intended to defend and protect US forces from attacks like the ones on Aug. 15 against US personnel by Iran-backed groups, Buccino explained. “The US strikes targeted infrastructure facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.”

“Today’s strikes were necessary to protect and defend US personnel. The United States took proportionate, deliberate action intended to limit the risk of escalation and minimize the risk of casualties,” Buccino attested.

“The United States does not seek conflict but will continue to take necessary measures to protect and defend our people,” Buccino said.
