Over half of Americans believe national government is responsible for producing change, poll says

(Worthy News) – A new poll by Barna has found that 52 percent of American adults believe the national government, rather than Christian churches or other religious organizations, is responsible for creating “meaningful change” in the country, Christian Headlines (CH) reports.

Published this week, the poll found that only 26 percent of the 2,001 participants interviewed said religious groups were responsible for producing meaningful change, and only 25 percent said so about Christian churches, CH reports.

Fifty-one percent of participants said the state government is responsible for creating meaningful change, and 46 percent said the same about local government, CH said.

“When asked which institutions can help create meaningful change in a divided nation, Americans overwhelmingly believe the government (at the national, state, and local levels) is responsible for curing the ills of the United States,” a Barna analysis said.

“Half of Americans see the federal government as responsible for making things better – that’s twice the number that hold religious organizations or Christian churches responsible for making real change possible.”

Nevertheless, the poll found that 70 percent of Americans would still turn to a Christian leader for guidance on “sensitive topics,” CH reports.

“With one in five Americans reporting a relationship that was negatively impacted by the 2020 election, it’s encouraging to know that, when thinking on future conversations U.S. adults might have with loved ones, they consider pastors to be a reliable source of wisdom,” Barna said.
