TEHRAN/WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – Iran has ordered attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia and United States forces prompting both nations to be on high alert, several sources said Tuesday.

Saudi intelligence shared with Washington suggested that besides hitting Saudi sites, Iran also plans to strike the city of Erbil in neighboring Iraq, where U.S. troops are located.

The planned attacks are reportedly intended as a distraction from ongoing protests in Iran against the Islamic nation’s leadership, the intelligence suggested.

The U.S. Department of Defense said Tuesday it was concerned about Iran’s impending threat against American forces and their partners in the Middle East.

“We do remain concerned about the threat situation in the region,” confirmed Defense Department spokesman Pat Ryder on Tuesday afternoon.

His remarks came amid broader U.S. worries about Iran’s alleged involvement in efforts to destabilize Europe. Washington says Tehran has supplied Russia with kamikaze drones for use in its war against Ukraine.

NUCLEAR DEAL

That prompted the Biden administration to set aside efforts to resurrect the Iran nuclear deal, which then-President Donald J. Trump abandoned in 2018.

The reported Iranian threats come as Iran’s Islamic rulers face protests ignited by the death of Mahsa Amini, who passed away after being detained for wearing her hijab “improperly.”

Iran’s hardline judiciary said Monday it would hold public trials of about 1,000 people indicted for the ongoing unrest in Tehran that has led to the deaths of other young women and girls.

Yet despite the crackdown, the spreading rallies, now in their seventh week, show no sign of ending. It was unclear what impact Iranian attacks against Saudi Arabia and U.S. targets would have on Iranian public opinion.

The security cooperation between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia against Iran came despite President Joe Biden being at odds with Saudi leaders over oil policies.

Washington was infuriated that the Saudi-led OPEC+ group recently decided to cut oil output. The reduced oil production raised fears of a gasoline price spike in the U.S. ahead of the mid-term elections.
