KABUL (Worthy News) – Afghanistan’s Islamic government on Tuesday barred women from attending private and public universities in the latest severe blow to women’s rights.

The announcement by the education ministry was another setback for Afghan women raised in an era of relative opportunity.

Yet their rights were slowly erased since the Western-backed government collapsed last year.

It is part of a crackdown by the ruling Taliban group, which recently reintroduced Shariah law, the feared Islamic legislation that endangers Christians and others perceived as non-Islamic.

The Taliban already carried out public floggings across the country and conducted one public execution, several sources said.

Observers said the Taliban policies are threatening the influx of badly needed international aid that has kept Afghanistan from the brink of famine.

The nation also grapples with a devastating economic collapse.
