(Worthy News) – Amid rising regional tensions, Jordan has called for an urgent summit of Arab nations to address what it describes as Israeli “aggression” after Israel’s police arrested 350 Palestinians during a riot on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount Tuesday, i24News reports.

According to Jordan, Israel’s recent actions are part of an effort to change the legal status of the Temple Mount by wresting authority away from Amman (which was allowed to maintain control over the Al Aqsa mosque following Israel’s capture of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War), and placing it with the Israeli government.

Tuesday’s riots were followed by rockets being fired at southern Israeli towns from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip in the early hours of Wednesday, which in turn were followed Wednesday by Israel Defense Forces strikes on Hamas targets in the enclave.

In a statement condemning Israel, Jordan’s foreign ministry said Wednesday: “Israeli aggression is unacceptable and its purpose is to change the historical and legal status of Jerusalem,” Amman said, calling for an emergency meeting of the Arab League.“We are taking all measures to stop the dangerous Israeli escalation that threatens the region,” the ministry continued.

Meanwhile, the Hamas terror group urged Palestinians to rise up and “go en masse to the Al-Aqsa mosque to defend it,” accusing Israel of “unprecedented crime” by Israeli forces, TOI said.
