(Worthy News) – At least 270 civilians have been killed in Sudan, and thousands have been displaced, as the battle which broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group at the weekend continued to rage past a purportedly agreed ceasefire on Thursday, India Today reports.

The violence erupted on Saturday further to an acrimonious dispute between the two generals who seized power in the 2021 coup: Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo who leads the RSF, IT reports. The dispute arose over plans to integrate the RSF into the official Sudanese army, a central condition for an agreement to restore Sudan’s democratic transition.

“Life in Khartoum is impossible if this war does not stop,” Alawya al-Tayeb, 33, told India Today as she left the Sudanese capital. “I tried to make children not see the slain bodies on the streets,” she said, adding that her children will need counseling for trauma.

Although both the army and the RSF had agreed to “fully commit to a complete ceasefire,” witnesses said their fighting and gunfire continued, IT reports.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to meet with the heads of the African Union, the Arab League and regional bloc the Intergovernmental Authority on Development on Thursday to discuss the situation, IT reports.
