(Worthy News) – Together with their fellow citizens, Christians in Sudan are facing great danger as the country appears to be descending into a violent, protracted civil war, International Christian Concern (ICC) reports.

Thousands of civilians have been killed and tens of thousands have been displaced since fighting broke out in April between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, representing the Arab-Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (“Hemedti”).

Amid the widespread devastation, on June 12, bombs were dropped on the predominantly Christian-populated Nuba Mountains, ICC reports. “Just moments after a Persecution Project emergency relief and outreach shelter were completed, two Sudanese fighter jets flew over and dropped two bombs in the area, terrorizing the inhabitants,” ICC said in its report.

In its June 21 issue, the Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin (RLPB), said the fighting was driving Sudanese Christians to escape to the south. “Hundreds of thousands of war-weary Christians in the jihad-ravaged Nuba mountains—many of them genocide survivors—are again facing the specter of war and famine,” the RLPB said.

Prior to this year’s outbreak of violence, Sudan ranked 10 on the US Open Doors World Watch List 2023 of top 50 countries where Christians are persecuted.
