(Worthy News) – An alliance of US Democratic governors met in California on Monday to discuss how to expand abortion access in their states and how to help women in Republican-led states to terminate their pregnancies if their state legislation does not allow it, the Washington Times reports.

Named the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, the consortium included twenty-one of the 24 US Democratic governors and was led by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, the Times said. Govs. Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Tony Evers of Wisconsin, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan were among those in attendance.

The Alliance said in a statement that their aim is to “build a firewall for reproductive freedom in the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned last summer.”

According to the Times, the Alliance considers reproductive freedom to include laws extending access to contraception, abortion, and to gender-transition.

In a statement, Gov. Cooper of North Carolina, which enacted a 12-week abortion ban this month after the Legislature’s GOP supermajority overrode his veto, said: “Protecting access to women’s reproductive health care is a top priority, and today’s conversation allowed us to exchange ideas and hear from providers who are on the front lines of this work. Your ZIP code shouldn’t determine your rights, but because of this Supreme Court, that’s where we are.”
