(Worthy News) – Police in Uganda have announced they were able to prevent a planned bombing attack on hundreds of Christian worshippers at the Lubaga Miracle Centre Cathedral in Kampala on Sunday, AFP/Reuters report.

While Christianity is legal in Uganda, Islamic rebel militias, including the ISIS-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) continue to plague the country with deadly terror attacks.

Ugandan police spokesman Patrick Onyango told reporters that officers had detained a man as he entered the Lubaga Miracle Centre Cathedral grounds carrying a bomb in his backpack on Sunday, AFP said. The bomb was discovered after intelligence agents received a tip off about the planned attack and tracked the suspect.

Hundreds of churchgoers were evacuated from the Lubaga Miracle Centre Cathedral, Onyango reported.

“We have carried out a controlled detonation of the improvised explosive device, which was made of nails, a motorcycle battery, a charger, and a telephone handset which was to be used in the attack,” Onyango said.

“We got information that one terrorist had already been sent out to go and carry out a mission, so they followed the terrorist,” he said.

During questioning, the suspect confessed he had three accomplices who were to carry out similar attacks elsewhere in the country. “He’s helping us locate those people,” Onyango said. Meanwhile, police have warned of future attacks on populated areas and shopping centers.
